FRACTURE TOUGHNESS TESTING

HOW STANDARD IS A DETERMINATION ACCORDING TO ASTM E399?

Developed in the 1970’s as the first standardized quantification of fracture toughness, it is still probably the most widely used worldwide. Starting out as a straight-forward test with simple data analysis method, both the materials technology and the method details have evolved since then, so now many laboratories and end-users of materials can expect very consistent results. However, comparing internally repeatable results between laboratories can still present a challenge. This paper looks at the impact of taking the next step in making test results more reproducible.
